Path 3: Resistance
With our feet firmly anchored in the present and our minds aligned with reality, we are ready for Path 3: Resistance.
I know what you might be thinking. Wait, didn’t you just tell us in the last article that we need to stop resisting?
It sounds like a contradiction, but in Simplicity, it is a crucial distinction.
- Path 2 (Alignment) is about not fighting the facts of reality.
- Path 3 (Resistance) is about fighting the lies about reality.
In Science of Mind, Ernest Holmes taught that spiritual mind treatment requires two movements: “Denial” of the false, and “Affirmation” of the true. Resistance is that first movement. It is the unwavering refusal to believe the lies that Ignorance tells you- whether they come from inside your own head or from the world around you.
The Problem: The Stealth Attack
Once you have managed to Anchor in the Now and Align with the facts of a situation, the small self doesn’t simply give up. Instead, it changes tactics. It whispers lies about what the facts mean.
Let’s go back to our example of the unexpected bill.
- The Fact (Aligned): “There is a bill for $200.”
- The Lie: “This means I am a failure. I will never get ahead. I am not safe.”
These lies are not facts. They are interpretations born from the Wound. They aim to diminish your worth and create panic.
If we do not practice Resistance, we accept these lies as truth. They lodge themselves deep in our consciousness. The Creative Law, which is always listening, begins to create a reality based on those lies because we have accepted them.
Expanding Resistance: Defending Against the World
This path is not just about your internal monologue. We live in a world steeped in collective Ignorance, which often manifests as racism, bigotry, homophobia, and judgment.
This external Ignorance projects its own lies onto us:
- The Fact: “You are a person of a certain race, gender, sexuality, or background.”
- The Lie: “You are inherently less capable. You are a threat. You are not worthy of love.”
These are not facts. These are virulent lies born of fear.
If we passively accept these narratives, we internalize the world’s Ignorance as our own truth. The result is a profound spiritual injury.
Resistance is our sacred armor. It is the fierce, unequivocal “No” to any thought or external projection that tries to disconnect you from your True Nature.
The Solution
Resistance is your inner guardian. It stands at the door of your mind and checks the ID of every thought trying to enter.
Here is how it operates:
1. Anchor and Align First
You cannot fight a lie if you cannot see the truth. First, acknowledge the fact (e.g., “Someone made a prejudiced comment.”).
2. Identify the Lie
Discern the difference between what happened and what it implies.
- Fact: “My proposal was rejected.”
- Lie: “I am incompetent.”
3. Active Refusal
This is the core of Resistance. You actively refuse the lie entry into your inner world. You declare, “No. I deny that lie. That is not my truth.”
You do not have to argue with the person who insulted you (though you can set boundaries). The most important work is arguing with the idea that their insult defines you.
4. Affirm Your True Nature
The “No” of Resistance is always followed by a “Yes” to the truth. “No, I am not less valuable. I am a whole expression of Spirit.”
Resistance vs. The Struggle
To keep Simplicity simple, remember this distinction:
- Alignment says “Yes” to the rain. (Accepting the fact).
- Resistance says “No” to the idea that the rain ruined your day. (Rejecting the interpretation).
Fighting reality depletes your energy. Fighting the lie protects your energy.
Practical Steps to Begin Resisting
The “Lie Detector” Pause
Whenever you feel a spike of shame, anxiety, or self-doubt, pause. Ask yourself: “What is the fact here? And what is the lie I am believing about it?”
Verbalize Your Resistance
Don’t just think it; say it. “No. I Resist the lie that I am a failure.” There is power in the spoken word.
The Sacred Boundary
When the world is heavy with bad news or hate, practice Resistance by guarding your intake. You can look at the state of the world (Alignment) without letting the hopelessness of the world take root in your heart (Resistance).
Resistance is the courageous act of standing guard at the gates of your consciousness. It is the boundary that allows you to be in the world, but not of the ignorance of the world.
Begin today. Anchor in the Now. Align with the facts. And fiercely Resist the lie.
