Jo’el Serrano

I’m a writer, an addictions counselor, a husband, a traveler, a person of color, and a student of life. But really, I’m just a guy with some simple ideas.
For decades, I have immersed myself in spiritual matters. I was an ordained Buddhist monk for a little while. I’ve been a student of numerous philosophical worldviews, from Advaita Vedanta to the Quakers, all giving me their fair share of tools that have helped me to survive in this whacky world of ours. I explored my Indigenous Taino roots and found wisdom that fundamentally changed how I perceive the world. I found a deep resonance with the inclusive, joyful teachings of New Thought, particularly the Science of Mind philosophy created by Ernest Holmes. And I knew that all of these paths that I explored were true and useful and beautiful in their own ways. But I also learned that trying to navigate the chaos of the world was a brutal thing. I learned about myself and all of my faults- the ugly and the beautiful which seemed to co-exist inside of me so naturally. I wrestled with demons in the dark and found love in the light. And all those spiritual tools helped me to navigate it all and achieve positive results. That was what eventually gave me the inspiration to take a moment in my life- to Anchor myself, so to speak- and figure out what I could do to help others get those same results.
Simplicity is what came of that.
Simplicity was not about inventing a new philosophy or spiritual path; it is about translating timeless truths into a language that works in our everyday lives. Whether I am counseling a client in recovery or writing a new blog post, my goal is always the same: to help people clear the mud of the “small self” so they can understand their True Nature, to see the beauty beyond the veil.
I’d like to think that Simplicity can make a difference in your life because it certainly has in mine. I chose the name Simplicity because it is all about keeping it simple, just a little flashlight in the dark, a pointing finger for when you are lost.
So, I may be a regular guy but I’m a happy one and I’d like to think a pretty darn chill one, too. That is what Simplicity does for me. Hopefully, it can do that for you, too.

The Toolkit for Your True Nature
Simplicity is a spiritual technology designed for the modern world. It is a practical system based on the foundational principles of New Thought teachers like Ernest Holmes and Malinda Cramer and the wisdom of history’s other great spiritual Architects, like the Buddha, Jesus, and Krishna.
We live in an era of “Terminal Urgency”- constantly rushing, constantly anxious, and constantly looking outside ourselves for answers. We have complicated happiness to the point where it feels impossible to reach.
Simplicity asks a radical question: Why not just keep it simple?
The Philosophy
Simplicity teaches that you are already whole. Regardless of your race, your gender, your sexuality, or whatever other descriptor the world has placed on you- you are whole. You are amazing, unique, and beautiful. That is your True Nature. You do not need to be fixed; you simply need to be revealed. And we use the map provided by numerous sources of wisdom to understand how our minds can distort reality and block you from seeing your wholeness.
Simplicity provides the specific tools to align your mind with your True Nature. One of those tools is the Five Paths of Simplicity.
The Five Paths
To navigate this journey, we use five specific practices:
- Anchoring: Rooting yourself in the Now to stop the drift of anxiety.
- Alignment: harmonizing your thoughts with the Creative Law.
- Resistance: The courage to say “No” to the noise and protect your peace.
- Gratitude: Shifting your broadcast from scarcity to abundance.
- Liberation: Releasing Emotional Debt to walk freely into your future.
This is not just something you read; it is something you do. It is the daily practice of dismantling Ignorance to reveal the Unshakeable Center within.
Throughout this website, I have provided more in-depth analysis of the Five Paths of Simplicity. Feel free to look around and explore Simplicity.
And remember:
Let’s keep it simple.
